The traditional number of almonds was symbolic; there were five, standing for health, happiness, fertility, wealth and longevity. The sweet sugar coating combined with the more bitter almond was supposed to be representative of the bitter-sweet character of marriage.
As time went by, guests started giving more varied and practical gifts to the happy couple and the gift of five almonds was made to the guests by the couple. In earlier times wedding brides journeyed rather long distances in order to choose wedding favors. The modern name for bomboniere is either wedding favor or guest gift, although some cultures retain the tradition. Many European cultures retain the tradition of giving bomboniere of five almonds which may be presented in little lace or net bags, or tiny boxes, decorated with ribbons.
Guest gifts are becoming more elaborate these days; more practical than the five almonds. The most popular gifts these days are photo frames which may have a picture of the happy couple, scented candles, pems and champagne glasses.
